You like people visiting your website right? At Nicely Done Sites we certainly hope so. If you had your site built by Nicely Done Sites you know that your site is secure so you have nothing to worry about with this but if you do not have your website secured you could have some trouble now as Google Chrome will not mark all unencrypted websites as unsecure.
Chrome’s announcement
The move was announced first in February as part of an effort to beef up web security. This is a significant step as Google Chrome is the most used web browser in the United States with nearly 50% of the users of the Internet using its browser to access it. For all websites that are not secure a message saying the website is not secure in the address bar. While somewhat subtle it can catch the eye of an alert user. Other browsers like Firefox may soon follow suit.
Is your site secure?
How do you know if a website is secure? It is simple, look in the address bar. Some browsers will have some sort of indicator like a green lock that will display next to the URL to indicate that the website is secure. You can also look at the URL itself and if it starts with https the website is secure and you will have nothing to worry about with your site. These indicators indicate whether a website has a Secure Socket Layer (SSL) Certificate.
Not hard to fix but it is a big deal
For some people this may not be a big deal. You may just operate a blog site which includes nothing more than your pictures and some stories. Well it could be and fixing it can be easy. SSL Certificates can cost nothing in some cases and can be obtained from several different companies. Of course if you are reading this why not let us help you out?
You may not feel like this is a big deal at all. It is. Google began implementing this for websites that required users to enter sensitive information in 2017. Some very popular websites like imdb.com were caught unprepared and for any website, particularly a business site, this can have major consequences. According to a survey from HubSpot Research 82% of respondents leave a website if it is not secure. That means that 4 out of 5 visitors to the site will go no further than the main page if they notice it is not secure and will not even consider buying something off of the site. That could be a lot of visitors being turned away.
