You have written a good content piece. It has taken you some time to research it, to write it, to proofread it and to format it. You want people to read it so you’ve made sure that it is posted on your social media pages. For websites though that content just doesn’t have much reach sometimes. So how can you get your content shared on social media to increase that reach?

The Blog Press ran a piece on this and provides some good ideas.

Now as a disclaimer there is no one tried and true solution. Some of these efforts may need to be tried and retried before results are seen but there are some things to keep in mind that will help to get your content shared on social media more frequently. Here are some things to consider:

  1. Have a Catchy Title. The title of the article is the first thing that people will see. This may be your only chance to catch someone’s attention so that they will read the content. Keep the title clear and concise, no one wants to have to decipher anything with your title. If they do, chances are they will not read the content and if no one reads the content no one will share it. But also remember do not provide any answers in your title as well. No one likes spoilers.
  2. The Layout of your site is important. The theme of your site, especially a WordPress site, can help to make your content stand out. It can even tell a reader’s subconscious to share the site based on the aesthetic quality alone.
  3. Have an Appealing Featured Image. Many people are visual people and having an appealing or eyegrabbing feature image alone can get people to share content. Just like with a web page the further down in content people go the less likely they are to read it. Since the image is at the top everyone will see it and this is potentially your one chance to grab someone’s attention. Don’t waste it.
  4. Heading and Subheadings. Headings help to break the content up and makes your content easier to understand, just don’t give away the store with them. Clear and concise headings will help your content deliver a message more effectively and if readers are better able to understand it, they will be more likely to share it.
  5. Short is Better. We’ve all heard that our attention spans are getting shorter and this can very well be true with your content. Short paragraphs help to keep your reader’s attention and if they remain engaged they will be more likely to understand your content and share it. Shorter paragraphs also make your content easier to read and readers will consider it well-written and will be more likely to share it with their friends.
6. Make it Easier for Your Readers. Sharing options can be added to your content to make it easier for people to share the content on platforms like Facebook and Twitter. The easier it is to share, the more likely people will be to do so.
  7. Ask Them. Don’t underestimate the power of simply asking people to do something. If your content is worthwhile to them or answers their questions they will do so. But the quality needs to be there with your content.

Creating engaging and thoughtful content is not always easy. It takes time and effort to do it and some people may not have the time. That is no excuse.
