It is rare that we here in York County get to witness an international sporting event but this week we have. The 2019 PDGA Amateur Disc Golf World Championship Powered by Prodigy was held at various sites located through York County as well as in Cumberland and Lancaster Counties. Nicely Done Sites is one of the core sponsors and we designed the website for the event (not to toot our own horn for this). So it is only fair that we should head down and check it out ourselves.
On a perfect July Friday morning we headed down to Kline’s Run Park south of Wrightsville for the Advanced Masters Womens Field. The park itself can only be described as beautiful and the course is a challenging one featuring uneven terrain, a meandering creek and scores of disc-stopping trees with disc-grabbing branches.
Play started promptly at 9 AM and this session went throughout the morning. Just like with regular golf there are 18 holes and a certain number of throws are needed to get to the basket to make par. It is golf, just with discs.
The players were all very friendly coming from as far away as Finland and the Netherlands to Texas and Florida here in the US. This July weather is quite mild for them, though many have been here since last weekend so they did get to enjoy the heatwave here. Thanks to this event they have come to York County for this tournament and we’re glad they came!
This was the final preliminary round before the field is pared down for the semi-finals and finals, which will be played tomorrow at Codorus State Park’s Red Course starting at 8 AM. You can watch the best amateur players in the world right in your backyard. We hope we will see you there tomorrow as world champions are crowned!
